The U.S.S. Brooke DEG-1/FFG-1 Association held it's eight annual reunion at the Silver Legacy Hotel in Reno, Nevada, August 26 - 30, 2009. Forty five shipmates, family and friends attended the annual gathering and Reno turned out to be a great gathering of the "Brooke Clan". From the Hospitality Room to the Lake Tahoe cruise and Virginia City Tour, the camaraderie and friendship that flowed over four days was a continuation of the Brooke spirit that has grown each year when we meet. And while old friendships continued, new friendships were made or renewed with the addition of several "first time" attendees this year. As always, my hat is off to all of you who traveled many miles to see old friends and share your experiences of Brooke with others. A special note regarding the wonderful spirit and courage of Yvonne Turner. On the second day of the reunion, Del Turner suffered an inflamed pancreas and was hospitalized. Fortunately the hospital was close to the hotel and Yvonne and several crewmembers were able to spend time with him. While Del eventually was released (he did end up having his gall bladder removed), he spent almost the entire reunion in the hospital. Nonetheless, Yvonne attended all the events and carried on for her and Del. I believe I speak for all the Brooke crewmembers and their families in that we are very thankful that everything turned out for the best and Del and Yvonne are safely back home in Oregon.
The following pictures are a representation of the four memorable days we spent together and I have tried to capture the best memories of that wonderful time. As with each year's photos, and the captions beneath, I take full responsibility for my attempt at wit, or lack thereof.
